The first thing you need to ask yourself is what sort of stylist do you want to be? A Fashion Stylist or a Personal Stylist? Because the two couldn’t be more different!
A Fashion stylist is someone who selects the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos and any public appearances made by celebrities. Being a fashion stylist requires you to live and breathe everything to do with fashion and build relationships with people in the fashion industry. Although the job description sounds glamorous it’s the not the most friendliest or easiest of industries. Long hours, being judged on your creativity and fashion knowledge come with the package. Most fashion stylists start at the bottom probably with minimal pay so it’s a career more suited to a young fashionista willing to put in the hard work.
A Personal Stylist helps an individual understand what styles of clothing suit their natural features and lifestyles, assisting that person to achieve confidence in the way they look and feel, basically styling real people with real styling dilemmas of any age, size and lifestyle. Being a personal stylist means you must be good with people and self-motivated but also means you have the flexibility to work to your own timetable and your own rules.
